USELESS - a People brand and not a Consumer brand….

I came across this blog tonight and the first posting caught my eye right away - there was a logo like the one you’re seeing here “USELESS”.  How brilliant!  We should definitely use less!  I went on and read the article, it discusses how “people” are not always “consumers”; in fact, we should try to be people and not consumers!  I like the idea.. and I agree with the concept.

Some of the products are very interesting:

  • the messenger bags are made of used billboards: 700,000 billboards are used annually (and discarded annually) in the US!
  • the “USELSS earth” costs $25 and you can by it made of 100% nothing  - all proceeds go into funding clean water projects
  • all products “locally” made in US
  • 10% of all sales go to funding clean water projects

Have a look at the website and this blog article, i enjoyed both!

Are you a consumer or a person?

How a B.C. carbon tax rose from Dion’s ashes

A great article on the May 19 Globe and Mail analyzing how the BC Carbon Tax “’survived” the recent BC provincial election while Stéphane Dion Carbon Shift didn’t. Stewart Elgie, David Boyd, and Chris Waddell , three Law, Economics, and Journalism professors in Ottawa, have come up with six reasons:

  1. Do not make Carbon Tax as the main issue for the election campaign (that’s what Dion and James did)
    • carbon tax is very important, but there are more important political issues
  2. Keep it simple (not many understand the BC carbon tax; no one understands Dion’s carbon shift)
    • Timing is important (Dion brought up the carbon shift when oil is at record price; oil price was 1/3 of the height during the recent BC election)
    • Good communication! (Dion couldn’t get his point across; James couldn’t come up with solid carbon policy for her party)
    • Deep pocket (Dion had less marketing budget than Harper; James had less marketing budget than Campbell)
    • Best policy may not win! (Dion lost on a better policy; yet Campbell won with a better policy) - yes, the Carbon Tax is one of the best policies!!

    Here’s one of the best quote about why Carbon Tax should not be the centre of the election campaign:

    “If you are a travel company trying to sell a tropical vacation, you emphasize the beach, not the flight.”

    - by Angus McAllister

    This is it!!  We want a sustainable/low carbon future; let’s emphasize on the ends, and let’s work together to get there - through carbon tax, renewable energy investment, energy conservation, or whatever the means might be!

    Liberal party leader Ignatieff says no to carbon tax in next federal election

    Michael Ignatieff  officially became the leader of the federal Liberal Party of Canada; he also officially erased Liberal’s connection to the carbon tax issue, formally known as the Green Shift when Stéphane Dion was the leader.  In today’s sparring with Stephen Harper (Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader of Canada), as reported on the Globe and Mail, Ignatieff said:

    “I made it very clear in a press conference on Sunday that we do not propose to go into the next election with a carbon tax, period. Is that clear? I sure hope it is.”

    - Michael Ignatieff, leader of Liberal Party of Canada

    I guess since the Green Shift made the Liberal party quite unpopular in Canada, there are good reasons to brush off the carbon tax.  Especially since the US is very keen on a cap-and-trade system.  I’m not clear what’s Ignatieff’s new policy on the environment, but there is no doubt that carbon is going to have a price tag.  I’ll stay in tune to see what he does in the near future, because it’s too early to judge….

    Energy Wasting Day - it’s easy to waste energy

    I can’t believe that I’ve never seen this before, it was made for April fools day for 2008…  it’s  really entertaining and I think would be a good message, could be a good education tool!

    Green IT for dummies

    The “for dummies” series have also got into the “green” world.  After a previous posting discussing Elizabeth May’s book on Global Warming For Dummies, I came across a new book called Green IT for Dummies.  This is hot off the press, only published on April 14th, 2009.  An overview taken from Amazon.ca website listed the following main topics:

    • Green technology for computing hardware and software capable of reining in the costly, environmentally unfriendly waste that businesses and organizations generate;
    • Focus exclusively on using green technology to help businesses improve their energy consumption and benefit the environment;
    • Discusses topics such as power-management software, servers and storage solutions, datacenter cooling, virtualization and consolidation technology, smart tools for managing lighting, collaboration tools to reduce the need for travel, and more;
    • This guide provides an overview of what green technology is, what problems it can (and can’t) solve, and how businesses or organizations might go about planning and implementing green technology solutions; and
    • Also demonstrates how green technology will benefit the business with lower energy costs.

    Maybe I’ll flip through it next time I’m at a Chapters….
